How to grow your very own Flowering Stone

Step 1: Place the tablet of compressed compost into a cup and fill one-third with warm water. When the tablet is fully saturated it will swell up and then it’s ready to crumble up and put into the pot. Let it dry for a few days until the compost feels just damp and add the sand provided with the compost.

Step 2: Sprinkle the seeds and sand mixture on top of compost and press lightly. Seal in a polythene bag until germination which can take from 2-12 weeks at 18-27C (65-80F). Keep warm and out of direct sunlight. Ideally sow from mid winter to late summer.

Step 3: remove polythene bag and place seedlings in a well ventilated and light sunny position.

Step 4: The plants grow slowly and when large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings into 6cm (2.5in) pots of quick draining soil / sand mix 2:1 Water with care and allow the surface of the soil to dry out slightly before giving a fine mist spray.

mature plants appear dormant, they are in fact, growing during the winter months until the spring. Watering should begin with a good drenching in mid August to encourage their new growth cycle. It is important to let the soil dry out between watering. Do not water after the end of September and then allow the soil to dry out completely in preparation for the cold winter months. Lithops become dormant during the summer months, and they require no water during this period.
